BIO
Originally from Aranda de Duero, Spain and now based in Byron Bay, Australia Alberto has developed an unique hand-colouring technique that enables him to develop scenarios of a sci-fiction nature out of most ordinary scenarios. This heavy use of hand-colouring and texture results in a range of colourful masquerades and improbable landscapes, in which us, the audience, are forced to participate in the eternal struggle between Good and Evil. The images fluctuate between the strictly narrative to the matter-of-fact photographic record, resulting in a hybrid reality of physical and imagined worlds.
Alberto conceives photography as a creative art form that is not constricted to the digital medium, where he photographs, prints, hacks and re-invents his own photographs to give them his unique flavour. He sees photography as a kind of time traveling experience, a mixture of magic realism, which enables him to rediscover the world through his viewfinder.
Alberto s fine art photography has won him numerous awards including semi-finalist Doug Moran Portrait Prize, finalist Prometheus Visual Arts Award 2011, AIPP 2010 Runner Up QLD Portrait Photographer of the Year, Highly Commended Olive Cotton Award 2009, People s Choice and Finalist at HeadOn Alternative Portrait Awards 2009, finalist Olive Cotton Award 2008 in addition to 26 silver and bronze awards at the AIPP National Canon Awards 2007 - 2010.
ARTIST STATEMENT
My body of work was originally conceived in 2008 inspired by costume wearing spectacles such as Lucha Libre (Mexican Freestyle wrestling), japanese anime and various super-hero paraphernalia. However, over the past few years, these simple broad themes have developed and headed towards concepts such as those of place and belonging.
I was brought up in an small town in Castilla (Spain), an area surrounded by medieval castles, Roman aqueducts and Gothic cathedrals, nurtured ancestral lands, celebrated culture and traditions that are still very much anchored in old Roman hierarchical structures. Since moving to Australia, almost 10 years ago, I have been able to reflect, from the safety of distance, as to how our identity is defined by place and time.
My images are populated by unearthly characters in recognisable scenarios.
