I was born in New Zealand and immigrated with my family to Australia at the age of three. My family owned and operated Hotels in Brisbane, Toowoomba, Currumbin, Bundaberg and Rockhampton. From the age of 3 till my late teens I lived with my parents in some of these hotels and spent my childhood holidays with my Grandparents in the others.
My background is in Interior Design and I specialise in Display Homes having won several awards in this area from The Housing Industry Association of Queensland. In 1993, I decided to push my creative urges to their limits by taking on a Certificate in Fine Art and then going on to a Diploma in Fine Art, both received from the Brisbane Institute of Art. In 2002 I then finished a Master in Fine Art Degree completed at the QUT, Kelvin Grove, Brisbane, Qld.
After living all my life in the heart of the city, 3 years ago I re-located to the lush countryside; namely Maleny, in the Hinterland of the Sunshine Coast of Queensland. This move was mainly to concentrate on my art practice however it has had a huge effect on my work, something that I had not anticipated.
My studio is bathed in natural light and is beside vast green fields where cattle graze constantly. I became fascinated with the architectural and sculptural qualities of these amazing animals and decided to explore their qualities in oil paint. I have now had three solo exhibitions in the last 3 years which all show-cased my new works of cattle and horses, these exhibitions have proved to be very well received and highly successful.
My artistic influences for my paintings would clearly be two Australian artists, Charles Blackman and Sam Fullbrook, although I am also fascinated by the work of Soutine and Modigliani.
When I am not painting, I enjoy sculpting and also create assemblage works using recycled materials. One of my paintings is in the collection of the Brisbane Boys Grammar School; and the Stanthorpe Art Gallery has included one of my Bronze sculptures in their permanent collection. My influences in sculpture are Giacometti and Brancusi; and in my assemblage I love the work of Rosalie Gascoyne.
I hold one or two Solo exhibitions each year and also enjoy exhibiting in group shows. I am also working on creating a series of collectible bronze sculptures. My work is held in Galleries in Japan, Victoria, New South Wales, Western Australia and Queensland and is in many corporate and private collections.
ARTIST STATEMENT
I am a professional artist, creating paintings and sculpture for nearly 20 years, and hold a Diploma in Fine Art and Master in Fine Art Degrees.
I have lived all my life in the heart of Brisbane city and a few years ago my husband and I relocated to the beautiful and lush environment of Maleny, in the hinterland, adjacent to the Sunshine Coast, in Queensland, Australia.
Humour and colour have always played an important part in my work, allowing the viewer to engage on an immediate level. The titles of the works that I create often come before the work itself, particularly in my sculpture and assemblage. By that I mean I, think in pictures. I have always enjoyed analysing song lyrics and metaphors and also write poetry, so the works are basically physical interpretations of text. My idea is that the art I make, will resonate with the viewer and allow a personal dialogue.
My bronze sculptures are often interpretations of metaphors or songs, in a three dimensional form, creating a visual language. I have always taken from within, to create my artwork, with the layering of childhood memories. It's never too late to have a happy childhood!
