Hilary Herrmann's works combine figures, creatures and visual references often reflecting a wide-ranging curiosity and reference. A diverse range of sources that include fragments and abstractions from world mythologies, the kabbalah, poetry, novels, current affairs and personal memory.
She graduated with a Visual Arts Degree from Southern Cross University in 2003 and went on to complete a Diploma of Fine Arts in 2008. She has made the Directors cut of the Blake Prize in 2010 and has been a finalist in the Lismore Regional Galleries Portrait Prize 2011, the Portia Geach and the Border Art Prize.
Hilary's works are a metaphorical place to find haven from the harsh and complicated of the modern world, the shadow of which is still discernible. This makes for a strangely compelling cocktail of innocence, whimsy, longing and menace.
ARTIST STATEMENT
I am motivated to paint by the need to express my thoughts and imagination. The figures, creatures and visual references often reflect a wide-ranging curiosity and reference. A diverse range of sources that include fragments and abstractions from world mythologies, the kabbalah, poetry, novels, current affairs and personal memory.
The works are a metaphorical place to find haven from the harsh and complicated of the modern world, the shadow of which is still discernible. This makes for a strangely compelling cocktail of innocence, whimsy, longing and menace.
My work is also about painting and mark making.
