PRESS | In Retrospect Book - Northen Star

Northen Star

In Retrospect Book

Retrospectively speaking it’s a modern world

"IN RETROSPECT is a beautifully produced book of artworks, accompanied by thoughts on life, art and everything, by artists associated with the Retrospect Galleries in Byron Bay, which will be launched at the gallery this evening at 5.30pm. Put together by gallery director Bree Delian, the book exemplifies the works of artists who exhibit at Retrospect. Most are North Coast locals, but some live interstate and two are from other countries. Each of the 34 artists is introduced with a brief biography, and has also answered a series of questions which illuminate their attitudes to their work and their world. This is not a stodgy gallery catalogue; it is bright, entertaining and full of wonderful pictures to look at again and again."

"Restrospect Galleries, Byron Bay, has just published a new full colour 140 page book introducing 34 of the artists that they represent. In Retrospect 10 comprises Q & A style interviews and three full pages of images for each of the featured artists who include Dolores Cupcake, Dennis Ropar, Fawn Gehwellar and Kelsey Brookes. The book is intended as an annual publication, with planning for In Retrospect 11 already underway."

Photographer Grant MacIntyre recently travelled to Barcelona where he was captivated by the mish mash of graffiti on every wall, shutter and door. We’ve fallen for the combination of colours and imagery he photographed there too and are excited to release a selection of works from his Barca series.

NEW WORKS - Alberto Sanchez

Retrospect is literally bursting with exciting new works this month, including lots of miniature pieces on display as part of our Petits Travaux show. We’re particularly excited about a new series of images by artist/photographer Alberto Sanchez, created using photos taken around Byron Bay over the past few years, with each piece individually manipulated and marked to create unique fine art with a vintage/surf feel.

Artist of the Month | Nikky Morgan-Smith

Each month we present an interview with one of our amazing artists. This month it’s Byron Bay based painter Nikky Morgan Smith, sharing some of the things - both real and imagined, that make her world tick.

A graduate from  Southern Cross University Nikky was awarded a highly commended in the SCU Student Art Prize. Since graduating she has been working as a professional artist firstly in Melbourne and now in Byron Bay. Her works are a response to her environment and incorporate the real and intimately domestic with the emotional and imagined. Poetic and often lyrical Nikky’s work exhibits a confident and gestural use of line and paint. Nikky’s commitment to her art practice apparent in the impressive list of exhibitions under her belt, make her one to watch out for in 2010.

Right now I am…
in the studio watching paint dry.

The person who has most influenced my art is….
My parents, who are also artists, they have lots to say. One day I woke up and there were post it notes stuck on my paintings with ‘constructive criticisms’ its hard not to influenced in that environment!

My favourite artist is…
at the moment I love Peter Greenaway, Anthony Myself, Robert Rauschenberg, too many to name.

I’m inspired to start a new work when…
images, words, experiences, memory and ideas all build up until they just start to manifest.

I am at my most creative/productive when…
It’s night and there is no one around.

I usually start my day by…
looking at the work I did the night before and sometimes cringing, sometimes feeling good.

The book that changed my life is…
The divided heart by Rachel Power. It taught me a new way of understanding my life.

When I am working I like to listen to…

my limited computer music until I can’t stand it any more, then it’s just me in my head.

It makes me smile when…
other people smile, or fall over.

I get angry about…
injustices and burnt cake.

The three things in life I could never give up are …

having a creative outlet, chocolate, sleep.

If I was stranded on a desert island I would want…
the people I love, water, a helicopter and helicopter manual.

My dream dinner party of six would include….
My friends that live far away.

If it were my party, I would serve…
lots of small things and mojitos.

The achievement I am most proud of is…

managing to get by so far.

The most valuable lesson I have learned in life is…

you just keep learning.

When I die, I would like my gravestone to say…
I hope when I die I just disappear and they have to erect a giant monument in my honour that kids will graffiti on and birds will nest in the crook of my arm and eventually it will rust and decay.

If a young person told me they wanted to be like me when they grow up, I would tell them…
aaaaahahaha! Really-

I wish I had listened when my parents told me…

being an Artists is really hard work.

I hope my art ...
continues to  provide me with an out let for what I see and feel.

If I wasn’t an artist I would like to be…
hmmm, I would just be really confused if I wasn’t an artist.

NEW ARTIST - Nicole Tattersall

Using a selection of mediums, however favoring towards acrylics, pens, markers and spray cans.
