Baca Biography
Marcia Bacalhau, Baca as her friends call her, was born in the Northeast of Brazil.
She is part Portuguese, Dutch, and Native Brazilian. Baca grew up on a large ranch and had a simple and wonderful childhood.
Baca had her first contact with the art world through her teacher. As a child she wrote and directed school plays and also performed in the folkloric celebration of Carnaval.
At the age of 13 she was given her first paint brush by her mother, and started painting glass doors and windows, then moved on to carbon sketches and graffiti. At 21 she moved to the big city of Sao Paulo and started painting oil, rural scenarios at first, since they brought her beautiful memories of her childhood.
In 1991, she went on a snorkel and diving trip to the island of Fernando de Noronha in Brazil, where she instantly fell in love with the underwater world and its creatures, a love that showed, and captured, in her paintings.
Baca's talent caught the eye of Brazil's top architect and interior designer, Jorge Elias, whose work is well-known among Brazilian art circles.
Baca was also commissioned to design the set of Hebe Camargo, hostess of one of Brazil's leading talk-shows, which led to 2 interviews with television networks. Baca was involved in the '98-'99 Whitebread Round the World Race, organized and sponsored by Volvo.
Several years and art shows later, one of Baca's greatest dreams came true when contacted by Jann Cousteau, Jacques Cousteau's son who had seen her work on the Internet and was amazed by it.
Jacques Cousteau has always been Baca's greatest hero and inspiration. She wants to help save and preserve the ocean through her art by making people feel as if they are on a free dive, without the encumbrances of masks and tanks.
Baca, who has lived in the beautiful island of Maui with her husband and two little daughters, where she finds a constant source of inspiration. Baca has fulfilled one other dream as she now lives in Australia's world famous Gold Coast, from where she is set to explore the magic and wonders of Queensland's Great Barrier Reef.
