Tim got his first camera in a “show bag” at the age of 6, a plastic 126 canister fed camera that looked like a small SLR, this sparked his interest although nothing of value ever came from the camera. At 10 years old Tim got for xmas a 110 canister fed camera which really started him on his way to becoming a photographer, by 12 and many blurred photos later Tim began to read about photography through magazines, 100’s of magazines in fact that’s pretty much all Tim read for the next 6 years. At 14 (1980) his dad gave permission for Tim to use the family Pentax Spotmatic SLR, vintage 1964 and that’s when Tim actually produced some good shots and was hooked on becoming a photographer.
At 16 Tim unsuccessfully tried to get a job with the newspapers as a trainee photographer and got sidetracked into 9-5 jobs whilst keeping photography as a hobby.
At 23 Tim travelled for 3 years through England, Europe and Africa taking photographs of landscape and people in their environments, it was then that Tim decided to return to Australia and study photography at University. Graduating in 1999 for the Queensland College of Art, majoring in Commercial Advertising photography Tim assisted many of the most respected professional photographers in Brisbane until moving back to Byron Bay where he had grown up.
Having spent many years photographing “what he was told to” these days Tim is more focused on the internet world and does not photograph “for money”, he is quite happy with the freedom to create images without the pressure of “the client”.
Tim's major influences have been Ansel Adams and Robert Mapplethorpe, many traits of these 2 photographers can be found within the technical aspects of Tims work whilst the composition has often been compared to Laszlo Moholy-Nagy from the 1920’s German Bauhaus movement.
Now skilled in many diverse areas of photography along the way Tim found he had a particular eye for capturing the male nude. “I find it very creative, having photographed so many fantastic landscapes around the world the male nude to me is a landscape that I can manipulate, move and change rather then just capturing a moment the end result is more of my skill to see the end result and make it happen”.
Tim's male nudes have been published alongside many of the great photographers such as Gilbert and George, Greg Gorman, Erwin Olaf & Pierre Et Gilles, and this is Tim's current photographic project which you will see more of in the near future.
