Amazing New Work from Shane Martin

An amazing new piece arrived from artist Shane Martin in the Broadbeach gallery this morning - well worth a visit just to see in person!

Shane creates this using engraving techniques, and the application of finely ground intense transparent pigments, which all lay beneath a deep layer of crystal clear glaze to give an incredible depth of colour and life to each piece. With a 3D like quality, these works transform their appearance depending on the angle of light reflection, to create an interactive experience for the viewer.

    New Works | Alberto Sanchez

Award winning photographer Alberto Sanchez brings us some amazing new works as part of our Shutterspeed exhibition in our Byron Bay gallery.  The artworks are a colourful and reflective vision of Tokyo, a place Alberto was fascinated with when he travelled there. Alberto's hand painting on each photograph makes each piece unique and enhances the emotion you feel when viewing.  From colourful vending machines to architecture and all the quirky objects we find in Japan, Alberto has captured the bright spirited nature of the Japanese city.

'Shutterspeed', featuring Alberto's Tokyo series opens Friday 11 March 6pm at the Byron Bay gallery.

    New Work | Shane Martin

For those of you who have been kind enough to wait, we actually have available luscious new work by one of favourite (and busiest!) artists Shane Martin. His works have been dissapearing off our walls in NSW and QLD faster than he can make them. With over 100 hours of work in each piece, these magnificent works shimmer with possibility. We only have two peices available so if you love his work, please contact us quickly! You can see his profile here.

I have been in LOVE since our 'Blind Date' over 30years ago. Shirley was the inspiration for the first LOVE piece, which has now become my most successful series to date. I wanted to create something simple in concept, but also containing a message the theme of LOVE, and incorporating all the emotions associated with it. Passion, Respect, Honour, Truth, Desire, Intimacy and Integrity. Each piece is Hand Engraved, Hand Coloured and Hand Polished a true labour of LOVE.

I still get a buzz each time that 'Wet Look' shine evolves during the polishing process, showcasing those deep, almost edible, Toffee Apple Red colours. When a person stops for just a moment to view and reflect on a piece I have created, I believe I have succeeded in my work.

I couldn't believe my eyes".

    NEW WORKS - Anna Nordstrom

In this new series of work, Anna Nordstrom is exploring contemporary Chinese culture through memorabilia  collected while on a visit to Shanghai in 2007.

Cigarette packets have been cut into the shapes of buildings. Photographs have been printed out on tissue paper and  embedded in encoustics. Business cards, tickets and advertising have been placed at random amongst painted Chinese landscapes. Glimpses of Mao propaganda pops its head up here and there - revealing the starting point of each work

The painted imagery are mainly taken from exhibition catalogues of  contemporary Chinese artist Xue Song who in his turn has taken his imagery from Feng Zikai – a modern cartoonist who has made a unique mark in Chinese fine arts history. Feng Zikai's work either borrow from the classics to hint what is in reality, or reveal profoundness in something common and trivial.

Xue Song's work appear to be the spitting image of Feng's original cartoons with the addition of calligraphy, brush painting and memories of colonial Shanghai as well as his signature usage of paper ashes to mark outlines.

Anna Nordstrom borrow her imagery at random from Xue Song's work. One part of a mountain, a river, houses, trees – are pulled from Xue Song's work and placed on Nordstrom's canvas where ever she finds it fitting. The additional painted imagery are copied from advertising or Nordstrom's own photography.

In these works Nordstrom is reflecting on contemporary society where nothing is really 'new' and the notion of openly borrowing from other artists, thinkers and shakers are accepted and even embraced. This concept is not new for Anna Nordstrom who, for the past 10 years has utilized used, found objects in her work to reflect on past ideas, events and actions that are affecting our contemporary society..

NEW ARTWORKS - by Kelsey Brookes

We had two great paintings last year from American Urban artist Kelsey Brookes for our Where Mighty Giants Dwell exhibition and congratulations on the couple from Brisbane who bought one of his masterpieces, and now we have three new paintings, (one is actually a triptych- so does that make it 5-) I am so excited to get some of Kelsey's new work and so should you be, you will have to come to the Revolution of Art exhibition to see them in the flesh and you will know what I am talking about. They are almost hallucinogenic, three dimensional and thought provoking.

This painting is called the Birth of Garuda and is my favourite peice of the works coming from Kelsey, the other two are fantastic too, you will have to check out his gallery page for 'Between a forgotten Beginning' and a secret ending and 'Fine Feathers."

    NEW WORKS - Donna Malone

Donna Malone grew up in Sydney, raised her 4 children in the Byron Shire, and is a now, a full time practising and exhibiting artist, based in Brisbane.

Well her new work speaks for itself and has been getting a great response, we at Retrospect love the moodiness of her work and her depth of emotion. Donna brought in this great work, ink on Saunders Waterford paper for us called "I can't keep track of each fallen robin..."a mysterious watery figure freefalling through time and place. It lasted about five days on the wall, but you all deserve to have a look at it so we are posting it anyway..

Donna says "I have always responded to life by Drawing. Drawing daily is a necessity for me and keeps me connected to myself. I am an instinctual artist who uses a diverse range of materials and techniques in a compelled and impulsive way. I am interested in spontaneity, paradox, the liminal (spaces between), indigenous culture, anamorphism and the human form."

NEW WORKS - by Hilary Herrmann

Hilary is motivated to paint by the need to express her thoughts and imagination. The figures, creatures and visual references often reflect a wide-ranging curiosity and reference. A diverse range of sources that include fragments and abstractions from world mythologies, the kabbalah, poetry, novels, current affairs and personal memory.

Hilary brought in this delightful series of five gorgeous 200 x 300mm paintings (only three left now) and we are really happy with how they have turned out. They are called voices in my head, internal flight, small blue thoughts, thoughts of a blue bird and many shapes form my dreams. This series of work relates to the place where we collect our hopes, fantasies, anxieties and fears… They are part of us, and filter out in everyday connections with the world. Sometimes there is an inability to control these feelings and urges. Sometimes these are acceptable social norms but sometimes they are not. They can be as harmless as a daydream and this work is about safe places to escape.

NEW WORKS - by Mia Taninaka

For those of you waiting for new Mia Taninaka paintings and for those of you who don't know who she is because her work sells out so fast don't worry, we have three new paintings  In the true style of Mia, who mixes shamanistic elements, nature and anthropomorphism these delight the senses taking us to a world where the sea is reclaiming what was once its own...

This painting is called The Mothership, and the photo does little justice to the intricate detail and texture of her work, but you can get an idea.

Check out Mia's artist profile and see her other available works of art.
